Day 18 of Higher Carb Starch Solution: May 1st

Day 18/28

I hosted a vegan potluck today–the last get-together I’ll have with my animal rights club. This club has been one of the most important parts of my college experience over the last 3 years, and I’m seriously going to miss all the awesome people in it!

I made donuts (surprise!) for the occasion, which means I’ve added another recipe to my in-progress donut ebook: mini chocolate coconut donuts, with homemade sweetened condensed coconut milk! They were a hit and got eaten quickly, and my omnivore friends loved them too. People also brought delicious pumpkin cookies, mashed sweet potato, black bean salad, potato wedges, and quinoa milk!

I also had a pretty amazing revelation: I had zero urge to binge. Those who followed this blog in its early days 2 years ago might remember this, but I used to have a pretty bad binging problem. Thankfully I never gained more than 10lbs because I restricted my calories in between binges, though that no doubt perpetuated the binging cycle. These potlucks and other food events (including just going to restaurants) used to be big binge triggers for me, and I would lose control, eat an embarrassing amount until I felt sick, and feel awful about it for days. But for the first time in 10 years I can say that I hardly even noticed the food either way: I wasn’t trying to control my intake in any way and I felt no urge to overeat. I just ate bits of what I felt like here and there (since there wasn’t a ton of food for the number of people who came), regardless of fat content, and realized I was actually in a mood for vegetables–so I had romaine wraps after everyone left. Old me would have eaten donuts and cookies one after the other throughout the whole two hours, eaten all the leftovers in one sitting, and only would have had vegetables in order to restrict my calories or punish myself for eating “bad foods”.

High carb low fat veganism has literally saved me. Not only have I repaired my relationship with food, but I now crave healthy things AND can lose weight while eating as much as I want!

In other news, I was planning on running after the potluck, but I had an unfortunate mishap with my door and am now missing half a toenail as a result… so I decided to make it a second rest day. Hopefully I’ll be able to go for a very long run tomorrow if my toe recovers fast enough.  

Macros: 72% carbs, 12% protein, 16% fat

Exercise: Walked 20 minutes


  • Double chocolate oat pancakes
  • Coldbrew coffee


  • Cauliflower red pepper mac n cheeze


  • Potluck: mini donuts, pumpkin cookie, salad, mashed sweet potato
  • Pulled BBQ carrot romaine wraps

Calories eaten: 2090 | Calories burned: 1680 (according to Fitbit data)

  1. Hi Miche 🙂 I just came here to be nosey after you liked my post on “How I got Veganized” and can’t believe how much I can relate to this! I come from a background of restrictive eating and binge eating too and although I can’t say I am completely free of this mindset yet, since coming to a high carb vegan lifestyle I have many days similar to yours. It really does heal your relationship and your body. I hope things continue to go well for you and you find a new group of people to support you as you move on in your journey x


  2. Hi, Miche! This has nothing to do with your food-related stuff, but is more a response to our mention of your animal rights club. There’s a piece on The Beast today noting that there seems to be a growing movement to legislate against the cruelty that is declawing of cats. As a former full-time cat rescuer (and home-finder for close to 1,100 of ’em!), I have long been an advocate of banning declawing. Maybe some of your friends feel the same way. Just a heads up!
